SY
The first photo of SY came with the question, “What’s this? Another mystery boy in Joa’s already err complicated life?” I met him during a Saturday of ridiculous coffee pictures, the DDD magazine party and Seoul’s coolest art bar. He was older, handsome, smoked heavily, designed Korean posters for major Western films and was notorious in Seoul’s gay community as a playboy. There was something special about this one. Within 2 days I was distracted at work and referring to him as “my new boy SY”. Drink an unreasonable amount of photographic coffee → Become distracted in the park of Joa’s mind →
He called late at night until his battery died, leaving my mind running on after the conversation stopped. During one brutal, dizzy 12-hour workday, speaking to SY was the only thing that made me feel better. When I was too sick and exhausted to travel into Seoul, he impulsively took an expensive taxi all the way from Seoul to Airport New Town. An impromptu romantic Friday night ensued. Before he returned to work in the morning, I stole snaps of him sleeping among the blankets and my improbable indoor jungle. Endure the dizzy 12-hour workday → Take the taxi to Airport New Town → Find the sleeping-boy snaps →
Naturally, by early December SY was already “the last guy I was dating”. I recall being quite sad about this one. He was frequently out of reach, which definitely made him even more alluring. What survives is the bright side of the storm. Reach the last-guy-I-was-dating stage →
