Robin
Robin began the Korean teaching programme with me and by her first appearance on JoaFruit we were throwing stones into ominous mudflats, rollerblading around Airport New Town’s smooth empty roads, catching the bus to a real beach and documenting Korea’s first Ugly Dog. The town had supplied little besides unfinished buildings and flat roads. Fortunately, flat roads were ideal for rollerblading. Spend our first recorded island day together →
With Robin, a weekend too poor for Seoul could still contain a miniature dance party, seaside walks, horror films, choco biscuits and roller-blading. We repeatedly tested whether Airport New Town could be escaped on foot. It could not. One attempt through Siberian winds ended with the insides of our legs bright red with wind burn. Our first Seoul weekend began with a lift in a police car to a love hotel and ended with Nilesh and Robin’s Canadian friend Shannen in Itaewon’s poky little gay bars. Back on the island, Robbie and I took our usual fake honeymoon photos on frozen beaches and at sunset. I left Korea after 7 months and sadly left Robin behind in Airport New Town. She sent me a farewell collage. In nearly every surviving photo we are walking, skating, jumping or pretending to be newlyweds. We’re still in touch to this day. She’s a magnificent, special person.
